If an app will not move to the Trash, something is usually blocking it. The most common reasons are that the app is open, that an administrator installed it, or that macOS needs your permission first. Check each reason in order, starting with the simplest one.
Quick fixes
- Quit the app completely.
- Try moving it to the Trash again.
- If macOS asks for a password, enter it.
- Check App Management permission if macOS asked you about it.
- Restart your Mac and try again.
Reason 1: The app is open
Press Command and Q to quit it. Then check the menu bar. Some apps keep running in the background, so look for their icon near the clock.
If the app still will not quit, use Force Quit from the Apple menu. Save any work first, because force quitting can lose unsaved changes.
Reason 2: An administrator owns the app
Some apps are installed by an administrator. You may need an admin password to move them. Ask the person who manages the Mac, or sign in to an administrator account if you have one.
One-time purchase. Works on macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Reason 3: macOS needs your permission
macOS can ask before one app changes another. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then App Management. Turn on the app that is doing the removing, if it is listed.
Warning: Only change permissions for apps you trust.
Reason 4: The app is part of macOS
Apps such as Safari and Mail come with macOS. They cannot be removed.
Reason 5: The app is in use by something else
Some files stay locked while another program uses them, such as a backup tool or a sync app. Quit those programs, then try again.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Uninstallzy show a message when an app will not move?
It explains the reason, such as an open app or an admin-owned app, and suggests the next step. It never forces the app to move.
Will restarting my Mac help?
It can. A restart closes apps that may be holding files open.
What should I do if none of these work?
Check the app’s own uninstaller, or contact the app’s support team with the message you saw.
Want one simple step instead?
Uninstallzy shows every app with its size. Pick the app, confirm once, and it goes to the Trash.
