How to force uninstall an app on Mac

Learn the safe way to force an app to close and uninstall it on a Mac. Quit first, use Force Quit only if needed, and avoid risky delete commands.

There is no true force uninstall on a Mac. If an app will not quit, you can force it to close, then move it to the Trash. Force quitting can lose unsaved work, so try the gentle steps first and save anything you can before you force it.

Quick steps

  1. Try to quit the app with Command and Q.
  2. If it does not quit, use Force Quit.
  3. Wait a moment, then move the app to the Trash in Finder.

Step 1: Try a normal quit

Press Command and Q. Wait a few seconds. If the app asks you to save, save your work.

Step 2: Use Force Quit

  1. Click the Apple menu, then choose Force Quit. You can also press Option, Command, and Escape together.
  2. Select the app in the list.
  3. Click Force Quit, then confirm.

Buy and download

One-time purchase. Works on macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Warning: Force quitting can lose work you have not saved. Use it only when the app is stuck.

Step 3: Move the app to the Trash

Once the app is closed, move it to the Trash in Finder. Select the app and press Command and Delete. If it still will not move, use the steps in the guide on apps that will not delete.

Warning: Do not use Terminal commands that force-delete files. They remove files permanently and do not go to the Trash.

Why there is no “force delete” button

macOS blocks removing an app while it is running or while it is protected, on purpose. Forcing a removal can damage other apps or macOS itself. The safe approach is to close the app first, then move it to the Trash.

Frequently asked questions

Does force quitting delete the app?

No. It only closes the app. You still need to move it to the Trash.

Can Uninstallzy force quit an app?

No. Uninstallzy asks a running app to quit and waits up to 5 seconds. It never force-quits. If the app stays open, nothing is moved.

Is it safe to force quit?

It is usually safe, but you can lose unsaved work. Save first when you can.

Want one simple step instead?

Uninstallzy shows every app with its size. Pick the app, confirm once, and it goes to the Trash.
