Your storage may stay full after you delete apps for a few common reasons. The app may still be in the Trash, leftover files may remain, or large files may be somewhere else on your Mac. Check each reason in order, starting with the Trash.
Common reasons
- The Trash still holds the app. Moving an app to the Trash does not free space until you empty it.
- Leftover files remain. Some apps leave support files and caches in your Library folder.
- Large downloads and installers. Old
.dmgand.pkgfiles often stay in Downloads. - Big files elsewhere. Movies, photos, and projects can use far more space than apps.
- Storage takes time to update. The numbers can lag for a little while after a change.
Step 1: Empty the Trash
Open the Trash and check its contents. Put back anything you still need by right-clicking it and choosing Put Back. Then choose Finder, then Empty Trash.
Step 2: Check the Storage settings
Open System Settings, click General, then Storage. This page shows which areas use the most space. Compare it with what you expected to see.
One-time purchase. Works on macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Step 3: Check Downloads and large files
Look through Downloads for old installers and large files. Sort by size in list view to find the biggest ones. Move them to the Trash only if you no longer need them.
Step 4: Check your Library folder
Search your Library folder for the names of apps you removed. Leftover caches and support files can hold a surprising amount of space. Check each match before you remove it, and keep anything that holds your work.
Warning: Do not delete files in /System or /Library. Those are needed for macOS to run.
Step 5: Restart and check again
A restart can help macOS update its storage numbers. After you restart, open the Storage settings again and compare the results.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the space not show up right away?
The Trash and the Storage numbers can take a little time to update. Empty the Trash, then wait a moment or restart your Mac.
Can Uninstallzy show which apps are large?
Yes. It lists each app with its real size, so you can see the largest ones. It does not delete leftover files for you.
Is it normal for storage to look full even after cleanup?
Yes, sometimes. macOS stores some system files and temporary data that you cannot remove directly. Focus on apps, downloads, and large personal files first.
Want one simple step instead?
