App support files are stored in the Application Support folder in your Library. They can hold saved projects, templates, game saves, and other app data. Only delete support files for apps you have already removed, and check the contents first.
Quick steps
- Move the app to the Trash.
- Open
~/Library/Application Supportin Finder. - Find the folder named after the app.
- Open it and check what is inside.
- Move the folder to the Trash only if it clearly belongs to the removed app.
Step 1: Move the app to the Trash
Remove the app first, using the steps in the guide on completely uninstalling apps. Support files are easier to judge once the app is gone.
Step 2: Open the Application Support folder
- In Finder, press Shift, Command, and G.
- Type
~/Library/Application Supportand press Return.
One-time purchase. Works on macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Step 3: Check the folder
Open the folder that matches the app. Look at what is inside:
- Files you created, such as projects or documents, should be copied somewhere safe first.
- Game saves and templates are easy to lose.
- Folders with only temporary data are usually safe to move.
If you cannot tell what a file does, leave it in place.
Warning: Some support folders hold your documents or game saves. Moving them to the Trash removes access to that work. Warning: Never change anything in /Library. Only work inside your own Library folder.
Step 4: Move the folder to the Trash
Select the folder and press Command and Delete. Put it back from the Trash if you change your mind, as long as you have not emptied it.
Frequently asked questions
Will deleting support files remove the app?
No. The app is removed when you move it to the Trash. Support files are separate, so you can delete them afterward, or leave them alone.
Can I get support files back?
Yes, if you have not emptied the Trash. Open the Trash and choose Put Back. After the Trash is empty, you may need a backup.
Are support files always safe to delete?
No. Some hold your work. Check each folder before you move it.
